GdP Chief Kopelke Calls for ‘New Form of Toughness’ Following Weekend Unrest

Jochen Kopelke, head of the German Police Union (GdP), has called for stricter measures after incidents of unrest involving young individuals in multiple German cities over the weekend.

Jochen Kopelke, the chairman of the German Police Union (GdP), has addressed the disturbances that occurred over the weekend in more than 30 German cities. While many demonstrations were peaceful, isolated incidents of unrest were reported, particularly in Frankfurt and Hamburg. Kopelke referred to some of the individuals involved as ‘riot migrants,’ suggesting that boredom, social media influence, and a search for adrenaline were key factors driving their actions.

According to Kopelke, the disturbances were primarily caused by young men from socially disadvantaged areas, many of whom have a history of criminal behavior. He noted that these individuals often display open defiance toward law enforcement, engaging in activities such as vandalism, theft, and substance abuse. Videos of these actions are frequently shared on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, where they can generate income. Kopelke emphasized that this behavior reflects deeper issues related to failed integration and youth policies in Germany.

Kopelke criticized ongoing debates over terminology and identity, arguing that they distract from addressing the root causes of such incidents. He suggested that a more decisive approach, including faster legal proceedings and stricter enforcement, might be necessary to deter future unrest. Kopelke also highlighted the importance of identifying the residency and nationality of offenders, particularly those with temporary residence permits, to facilitate potential deportations. He concluded by calling for a ‘new form of toughness’ to address these challenges effectively.
