German Environmental Award Presented in Aachen: Steinmeier Highlights Urgency of Climate Action
The German Environmental Award was presented in Aachen, with President Steinmeier emphasizing the critical importance of prioritizing climate protection despite ongoing global crises.
The German Environmental Award, one of Europe’s most prestigious environmental honors with a prize of €500,000, was awarded in Aachen to environmental lawyer Roda Verheyen and membrane filter engineer Klaus Vossenkaul. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier used the occasion to stress the need for prioritizing climate protection, even amidst other pressing global challenges. He highlighted the increasing urgency of addressing climate change, stating, ‘The fever curve of our planet is clearly rising.’
During the ceremony, Steinmeier pointed out that concerns about stability and security have led many to place environmental and climate issues on the back burner. However, he emphasized the tangible impacts of climate change, particularly in Europe, which is warming at more than twice the global average rate. He referenced the record-breaking heatwaves, wildfires, and dried-up rivers experienced during the past summer, which resulted in 16,000 additional deaths according to the Robert Koch Institute. Steinmeier called for a reevaluation of lifestyles and economic practices to ensure a livable planet for future generations.
The award recipients were praised for their contributions to environmental protection. Roda Verheyen was recognized for her legal work advocating for climate justice, including her pivotal role in the 2021 constitutional complaint that influenced Germany’s climate neutrality goals. Klaus Vossenkaul was honored for his advancements in membrane filter technology, which improve wastewater treatment efficiency while conserving resources and reducing costs. Alexander Bonde, Secretary General of the German Federal Environmental Foundation, commended the winners as inspiring figures who embody determination, innovation, and a clear commitment to environmental and climate protection.
