Venezuelan Opposition Leader Machado Seeks Swift Return Amid Earthquake Crisis

María Corina Machado, Venezuelan opposition leader, has announced her intention to return to Venezuela to assist in earthquake relief efforts despite alleged government-imposed travel restrictions.

María Corina Machado, a prominent Venezuelan opposition leader, has declared her intention to return to Venezuela as quickly as possible to support citizens affected by the recent earthquake. Speaking from Panama on Monday, Machado accused the Venezuelan government of blocking her entry by closing the country’s airspace. She emphasized her determination to join the Venezuelan people in their time of need, despite the alleged obstacles imposed by authorities.

The earthquake has led to significant challenges in delivering humanitarian aid. Several international rescue teams, including a joint medical emergency team from ISAR Germany, Austrian specialists, and the Samaritan Federation, were unable to enter Venezuela due to denied entry permissions. Additionally, reports have surfaced of humanitarian aid being obstructed, including the confiscation of seven trucks carrying relief supplies organized by the student movement of the Central University of Venezuela. Media access to the disaster zone in La Guaira has also been restricted, with authorities citing sanitary concerns.

The United States has pledged over $300 million in aid to Venezuela, doubling its initial commitment of $150 million. This assistance is aimed at providing medical care, food, water, sanitation, shelter, and logistical support. US military units have been actively involved in repair efforts at the International Airport and the seaport in La Guaira. Meanwhile, the death toll from the earthquake has risen to 1,719, with over 5,000 injured and 15,000 displaced. Tens of thousands remain missing, raising concerns about a potentially higher casualty count.
