The conflict in Ukraine continues to escalate, with Russian President Vladimir Putin rejecting a proposal from Kyiv to mutually refrain from long-range attacks. Speaking on state television, Putin dismissed the Ukrainian initiative as a diversionary tactic aimed at hindering Russia’s military objectives. He accused Ukraine of attempting to distract Russian forces from their efforts to fully capture the Donbas region and the territories of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. According to Putin, the suggestion was made because Russian counterattacks have been, in his words, ‘far stronger, more effective, and, frankly, more destructive.’ He further emphasized that saving the ‘Kyiv regime’ was not part of Moscow’s plans.
Despite significant setbacks on the battlefield, Putin remains resolute in his rhetoric. In an interview with Russian state media, he projected confidence in achieving the goals of what Moscow refers to as its ‘special military operation.’ He attributed his optimism to what he described as a ‘catastrophic personnel shortage’ within Ukraine’s armed forces. Putin also claimed that Kyiv had proposed limiting combat to four regions in eastern Ukraine, a move he interpreted as an attempt to consolidate Ukrainian forces in those areas. However, he reiterated that Russia would not entertain such proposals, as they do not align with its broader strategic objectives.
Meanwhile, the human toll of the conflict continues to mount. In the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, Russian strikes claimed the lives of two civilians and injured 16 others, according to regional governor Ivan Fedorov. In the northeastern Kharkiv region, a missile attack on the town of Smijiw resulted in one fatality and eight injuries, including two children. Additionally, a police officer was killed while assisting with the evacuation of residents in a northern community. Ukrainian officials have condemned these attacks as further evidence of Russia’s disregard for civilian lives, while Moscow has yet to issue a statement on the incidents.
In a symbolic move, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans to establish a memorial in Kyiv honoring the nation’s historical and contemporary heroes. Speaking on Constitution Day, Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of self-determination and national independence, declaring that no external force would dictate Ukraine’s history or values. His remarks were seen as a pointed response to recent tensions with neighboring Poland, underscoring Ukraine’s resolve to define its own narrative amid ongoing conflict.
