TUI CEO Critiques German Economic Policy Amidst Rising Discontent
Sebastian Ebel, CEO of TUI AG, has expressed deep disappointment with the economic strategies of Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the current government, highlighting a lack of coherent planning and execution.
In a recent television interview, Sebastian Ebel, the head of the world’s largest travel company, criticized the German government’s economic policy, stating that many actions remain unfulfilled and appear to lack direction. Ebel’s remarks reflect a growing frustration among business leaders regarding the government’s approach to economic challenges.
Ebel specifically called out Chancellor Friedrich Merz for failing to provide a clear and effective economic strategy, describing the current situation as alarming. He noted that the deindustrialization trend is accelerating, and aside from improvements in the public sector, there has been little positive change.
The TUI CEO also expressed disappointment with Federal Minister of Economics Katharina Reiche, stating that he has yet to see a comprehensive plan for the country’s economic future. Ebel’s retrospective evaluation of the previous administration under Robert Habeck suggests that some policies, particularly regarding the energy transition, were on the right track but poorly communicated.
Public sentiment towards Chancellor Merz is deteriorating, with recent polls indicating that only 15% of eligible voters would support his party. This decline in popularity is not only a concern for the ruling party but also poses a broader threat to democratic engagement, as a significant portion of the electorate is choosing not to participate in upcoming elections.
