In a controversial move, Google Maps now displays Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’ for U.S. users following a Trump administration decree.

Users in the United States accessing Google Maps will now see Lake Ontario labeled as ‘Lake America.’ This change stems from a decree issued by President Donald Trump amid escalating trade tensions with Canada.

Google confirmed that the renaming is reflected in the official Geographic Names Register of the United States. While U.S. users will see the new name, Canadians will continue to refer to it as Lake Ontario. Outside of the U.S. and Canada, both names will be displayed.
