SPD Backtracks on Stricter Sick Leave Rules Amid Criticism

SPD leaders clarify that stricter sick leave rules are not finalized, emphasizing a balanced approach to reforms.

The SPD leadership has softened its stance on the proposed requirement for medical certificates from the first day of illness. SPD Chairman Lars Klingbeil stated in an interview with RTL/ntv that the specifics of the policy are still under discussion. He assured that the implementation would ensure no one is forced to visit a doctor immediately when sick. Health Minister Karl Lauterbach echoed this sentiment, emphasizing practicality in execution.

SPD Co-Chair Bärbel Bas also expressed reservations about the stricter rules, noting that the proposal was not her idea and questioning its effectiveness. She highlighted that the decision is not yet law and will undergo further evaluation. The SPD defended its role in preventing harsher measures, such as unpaid sick days, as part of the coalition’s compromises.
