Spain Rapidly Returns Thousands of Illegal Migrants to Morocco Amid Ceuta Crisis

Spain has repatriated approximately 48,000 illegal migrants to Morocco within 48 hours following a significant influx into Ceuta, which saw around 60,000 arrivals, nearly 70% of the enclave’s population.

The unprecedented surge in migrant crossings into Ceuta prompted Spanish authorities to declare a humanitarian and security crisis. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez confirmed the restoration of border control and the return of ‘virtually all’ irregular migrants, facilitated by coordination with Moroccan officials. The Spanish government deployed additional troops and installed a temporary inflatable barrier to deter further crossings. The crisis has raised alarms across Europe, leading Italy and France to enhance border checks. Ceuta’s President Juan Jesús Vivas criticized human smugglers for exacerbating the situation, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the events as ‘unacceptable.’ The surge has been linked to a recent Supreme Court ruling regarding migrant deportations, which Sánchez stated was misinterpreted by smuggling networks. Morocco’s ambassador emphasized the need for legal migration pathways.
