Spain and Poland Collaborate on Airbus A330 MRTT Tanker Acquisition
Spain and Poland have entered a joint agreement to procure Airbus A330 MRTT tankers, valued at €5.4 billion, enhancing NATO’s strategic air mobility.
Spain and Poland have formalized a seven-year framework agreement for the acquisition of Airbus A330 MRTT tankers, totaling €5.4 billion. This contract encompasses not only the aircraft but also extensive logistical support, spare parts, simulators, advanced defense and communication systems, and personnel training through 2030. Poland will receive four of the planned seven tankers, with the remaining three allocated to Spain. This acquisition marks a significant shift for the Polish Air Force, which has historically relied on allied capabilities for aerial refueling. The funding is supported by the European SAFE mechanism, with Poland earmarking approximately €43.7 billion. The A330 MRTT’s operational versatility will enhance Poland’s air capabilities, allowing for extended missions and improved response times in securing airspace amid regional tensions.
