Rents in Major German Cities Surge 51% Over a Decade

A new report reveals a staggering rise in rental prices across Germany’s largest cities.

Rents in the 40 largest German cities have increased by 51% over the past ten years, according to a survey by the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) based on data from market research institute Empirica.

In Berlin, the average rent skyrocketed from €8.93 per square meter in early 2016 to €15.80 by early 2026, marking a 76.9% increase. Other cities like Hamburg and Munich also saw significant hikes, with rents rising by 54.2% and 51.6%, respectively. DGB Vice Chairman Stefan Körzell is calling for stronger political measures to address this crisis.
