Regional Leader Criticizes Migration Policy and Questions Political Strategies Ahead of State Election

Stefan Kerth, a county official in Germany, has sharply criticized migration policies and political handling of voter concerns, calling for a shift in strategy ahead of regional elections.

Stefan Kerth, county administrator for Rügen, has openly criticized the government’s migration policies, describing them as a key indicator of political dysfunction. His comments come just weeks before the state elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where voter concerns over migration and political discourse are expected to play a pivotal role.

Kerth, who left the Social Democratic Party (SPD) after 22 years, has sparked widespread debate with his critiques. He accused political leaders of prioritizing ideological battles over addressing issues that drive voter dissatisfaction. He argued that German politicians should look to Denmark’s Social Democrats for solutions, where migration concerns are tackled more directly. Kerth suggested that such an approach could mitigate voter shifts to the far-right but lamented the reluctance of his former party to adopt similar strategies.

The Rügen official also questioned the effectiveness of isolating the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, attributing their success partly to the political ostracization they face. Kerth proposed engaging in dialogue with the AfD to foster realism within left-leaning political circles and warned against labeling large portions of the electorate as extremists. He underscored the need for policies that bridge divides rather than deepen them, emphasizing that migration challenges symbolize broader political stagnation.
