Record-Breaking Heat Intensified by El Niño and Climate Change
Global temperatures are reaching unprecedented levels, exacerbated by El Niño and anthropogenic climate change.
Multiple regions worldwide are experiencing record-breaking heat, driven by unusually warm ocean waters, the El Niño phenomenon, and alterations in the jet stream. Western Europe has recorded its hottest June, with France’s President Emmanuel Macron describing the situation as the most severe since World War II. In the United States, cities from Phoenix to Montana are bracing for extreme temperatures, with Phoenix forecasted to reach 115°F (46°C). The jet stream’s wavy pattern is facilitating the persistence of heat domes, while warm ocean temperatures contribute to the intensity of heat waves. El Niño, which is expected to be exceptionally strong this year, is likely to further elevate global temperatures. Climate scientists warn that the current conditions may challenge existing understandings of El Niño’s impacts, as the world has already warmed over 1.5°C, creating unprecedented climatic scenarios.
