Pay Raises for Retail Workers in North Rhine-Westphalia Finalized After Negotiations
Retail workers in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) will see pay increases following a landmark agreement between employers and the labor union Verdi. The deal marks the end of a protracted dispute and carries potential implications for other regions in Germany.
An agreement has been reached in the pay dispute for retail workers in NRW, concluding months of negotiations between employers and Verdi. The deal includes a three percent salary increase starting this month for employees of companies bound by collective agreements, followed by an additional two percent hike in May 2027. Workers in lower pay groups will see their minimum hourly wage rise to €14.20 in August 2026, and then to €14.90 in May 2027. Apprenticeship compensation will also be significantly improved under the new arrangement.
The collective wage agreement, which spans 25 months, averts the risk of strikes, which Verdi had previously threatened. This breakthrough comes after talks in Hessen recently failed, signaling the intense challenges faced during nationwide negotiations that began earlier this year. Both Verdi and the German Retail Association anticipate the agreement to establish a precedent for future negotiations within the sector.
Retail sector employment in NRW consists of approximately 700,000 workers, while the nationwide figure stands at 3.4 million. Despite the critical nature of the agreement, only 23 percent of retail employees across Germany benefit from collective bargaining agreements, a marked decline compared to broader industries where 49 percent of workers are covered. While this settlement offers well-deserved gains for unionized employees, it underscores the lack of tariff coverage for the majority of the sector’s workforce.
