OpenAI to Introduce Ads in ChatGPT Across Europe to Fund AI Development
Starting Monday, ChatGPT users in 31 European countries will see advertisements as OpenAI explores ad-based revenue to sustain its AI operations.
OpenAI has announced plans to introduce advertisements within ChatGPT for users across 31 European countries starting Monday. This move marks the company’s first significant step into ad-based monetization in Europe, following a pilot program launched in the United States six months ago. Countries affected include Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and several others, as OpenAI shifts strategies to ensure the financial sustainability of its AI technology.
The ad rollout comes with assurances of privacy protection, as OpenAI has clarified that advertisers will not have access to users’ chat histories. Ads displayed will be clearly differentiated from chatbot responses, featuring visual separators to maintain transparency. Dave Dugan, Vice President of Ads at OpenAI, mentioned that advertisements will appear below a distinct divider line to ensure clarity for users.
However, experts have raised concerns about potential challenges this strategy poses. Some have warned that ads may erode user trust, as ChatGPT is valued for its perceived neutrality and direct responses. Additionally, researchers have pointed out that ad presence within AI systems could inadvertently influence chatbot responses, potentially prioritizing commercial interests. OpenAI has emphasized its commitment to balancing ad revenue with user trust to address these concerns, integrating visual markers to keep ads non-intrusive and distinct.
