Novel Blood Marker for Protein Misfolding Surpasses P-tau 217 in Early Alzheimer’s Prediction

A study led by Professor Klaus Gerwert reveals that a blood marker indicating amyloid beta protein misfolding is a superior predictor of Alzheimer’s disease in asymptomatic individuals compared to P-tau 217.

The research, published in EMBO Molecular Medicine, analyzed blood samples from 779 participants over 17 years, demonstrating that the misfolding biomarker achieved an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.79, indicating strong predictive power in cognitively normal individuals. In contrast, P-tau 217 showed moderate predictive ability (AUC = 0.67) in the preclinical stage but excelled once the disease manifested clinically. The findings suggest that incorporating this biomarker into screening strategies could enhance early identification and intervention, potentially improving outcomes for at-risk populations.
