North Korea Expands Naval Power with New Destroyer and Nuclear Capabilities
North Korea has officially commissioned a new warship, the ‘Choe Hyon’, as part of its significant naval expansion, which includes plans to build nuclear-capable destroyers annually.
Kim Jong Un announced the commissioning of the 5,000-ton destroyer during a ceremony in Nampo, stating that North Korea aims to construct two large destroyers each year, with an emphasis on self-defense. The country is also planning to develop 10,000-ton destroyers equipped with nuclear capabilities.
The newly commissioned ‘Choe Hyon’ is reported to be armed with various systems, including anti-aircraft and anti-ship weapons, as well as ballistic missiles and cruise missiles that can be equipped with nuclear warheads. Experts believe that the ship’s construction likely involved Russian collaboration.
In response to perceived threats from the United States and South Korea, Kim emphasized the need for North Korea to enhance its deterrent capabilities. He criticized the military developments in the region, particularly South Korea’s plans for an atomic submarine. Despite international sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council due to its nuclear weapons program, North Korea continues to advance its military capabilities, solidifying its status as a nuclear power in its constitution in 2023.
