Merz Hits Record Low as CDU/CSU Faces Five-Year Weakness

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz faces plummeting approval ratings amid economic concerns and political dissatisfaction.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has hit a record low in approval ratings, with only 13% of respondents expressing satisfaction in the latest Deutschlandtrend survey conducted by Infratest Dimap for ARD-Tagesthemen and WELT. This marks a three-point drop from the previous month, while 84% of respondents are dissatisfied with his performance. Among CDU/CSU supporters, opinions are split, with 51% dissatisfied and 48% satisfied.

The survey also reveals broader political challenges for the CDU/CSU, which has dropped to 22% in the latest polling, its lowest level since November 2021. Economic concerns dominate public sentiment, with 78% of Germans worried about the country’s economic future. Climate change ranks as the second most pressing issue, with two-thirds of respondents expressing concern. Despite these challenges, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) remains the most popular politician, with 52% approval.
