Markus Söder Surpasses Alice Weidel in German Politician Rankings

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius retains his position as Germany’s most popular politician, while Markus Söder climbs to fourth place, overtaking Alice Weidel, who drops to sixth.

In the latest Insa ranking published by ‘Bild,’ Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) remains Germany’s most popular politician, scoring 5.0 points. Markus Söder (CSU), Bavaria’s Minister-President, has made notable progress, rising from fifth to fourth place, surpassing Alice Weidel (AfD), who falls to sixth. The ranking, based on an online survey conducted between June 26 and June 29 with 2,006 participants, highlights shifting public sentiment among Germany’s political leaders.

The ranking also shows significant movement among other politicians. Alexander Dobrindt (CSU), Germany’s Federal Interior Minister, climbed three spots to seventh place, while Heidi Reichinnek (Linke) entered the top ten for the first time, also gaining three positions. Conversely, AfD co-leader Tino Chrupalla experienced the steepest decline, dropping eight places from ninth to seventeenth. The ranking’s middle section remains tightly contested, with minimal point differences separating the leaders.

On the broader political landscape, the AfD continues to hold strong at 29% in national polling, maintaining its position as Germany’s leading party. The Union (CDU/CSU) saw a slight increase to 22%, while the SPD dropped to 12%. Other parties, including the Greens (13%), Linke (10.5%), and FDP (4%), showed little change. Despite the AfD’s dominance in polling, its leaders, including Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla, face declining popularity in individual rankings, reflecting a potential disconnect between party support and leadership approval.

These rankings and polling results underscore the evolving dynamics of German politics. While Boris Pistorius continues to enjoy widespread approval, the rise of Markus Söder and the decline of AfD leaders could signal shifting priorities among voters. The rankings also highlight the challenges faced by traditional parties like the SPD and CDU, which struggle to regain ground against the AfD’s growing influence. As Germany approaches key political milestones, these trends will likely shape future debates and decisions at both local and national levels.
