Left-Wing Party Takes Commanding Lead in Berlin Election Polls

A new survey reveals the Left Party has surged ahead in the Berlin state election race, leaving the CDU and AfD tied for second place, while the SPD suffers a significant setback.

With just four weeks remaining until the Berlin state elections, the Left Party has jumped to a commanding lead, securing 22% of voter support, according to recent polling data. This marks a notable four-point advantage over both the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Alternative for Germany (AfD), which are tied at 18% each. The Greens follow with 16%, while the once-dominant Social Democratic Party (SPD) languishes in fifth place at just 12%.

The poll results highlight a shift in voter dynamics, as the Left Party regains momentum after trailing narrowly behind the CDU in earlier surveys. For the SPD, the latest figures represent a dramatic setback, further distancing them from a competitive position. Smaller parties, including the Berlin Social Conservatives (BSW) and the Free Democratic Party (FDP), are projected to miss the 5% threshold required for representation in the state parliament, polling at 4% and 3% respectively.

As for potential governing coalitions, voter preferences currently favour a red-green-red alliance – comprising the Left Party, the Greens, and the SPD – which polls suggest could achieve a majority. Meanwhile, other configurations, such as a CDU-AfD partnership or the continuation of the existing CDU-SPD coalition, appear either mathematically unfeasible or politically unlikely. The survey, conducted among 1,535 respondents, underscores the growing unpredictability of Berlin’s political landscape amid shifting allegiances.
