Karlsruhe Court to Review Complaint on Public Broadcasting Fee Increase
Public broadcasters ARD and ZDF have filed a constitutional complaint against the federal states for not implementing a proposed increase in the broadcasting fee.
The Commission for the Determination of the Financial Requirements of Broadcasting Institutions (KEF) recommended an increase of 58 cents to a monthly fee of 18.94 euros, effective January 1, 2025. However, the KEF later revised its recommendation to a fee increase starting in 2027. ARD and ZDF argue that this delay infringes upon their constitutional right to broadcasting freedom as stipulated in Article 5 of the German Basic Law. A ruling from the Federal Constitutional Court is not anticipated today.
