IW Köln Warns Against New Gas Heating Installations

A recent study by IW Köln indicates that annual heating costs for new gas heating systems may nearly double by 2040.

According to the Rheinische Post, the IW investigation suggests that opting for heat pumps could maintain stable heating costs over the long term, potentially saving over €1,000 annually in partially renovated older apartments compared to gas heating. The new heating law eliminates the requirement for new heating systems to operate at least 65% on renewable energy sources, allowing continued installation of gas and oil heating systems. However, starting in 2029, these systems must increasingly incorporate climate-neutral energy sources such as biomethane or bio-oil.
