Internal Divisions and Extremism Claims Shake Hessen’s AfD Leadership

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in Hessen faces mounting internal disputes and allegations of extremist ties, raising questions about its leadership and future direction.

The AfD in Hessen is grappling with internal divisions and accusations of extremist influences, despite efforts by its leadership to present a unified and moderate image. Party co-leader Robert Lambrou, who has led the faction for five years, insists the regional branch has excluded members with extremist ties and avoided adopting absolute positions. However, critics within and outside the party argue that growing radical elements at the grassroots level are undermining its stability.

Former AfD member Dirk Gaw, who left the party citing disagreements over its migration policies, claims that local chapters have increasingly attracted individuals driven by anger and populism. This shift, according to Gaw, has altered the balance of power within the party and weakened Lambrou’s ability to lead effectively. Observers from other political factions in the state parliament have echoed concerns that Lambrou’s authority is waning, with some suggesting he is merely tolerated at the helm.

Adding to the party’s challenges, the Hessen branch of the AfD remains under scrutiny by the state’s Office for the Protection of the Constitution, which has classified it as a suspected right-wing extremist entity. A recent court ruling upheld this designation, citing the regional branch’s integration into the broader national party, which faces similar allegations. These developments cast doubt on the AfD’s ability to maintain its position as a viable political force in Hessen amid growing internal and external pressures.
