Germany Launches Drone Security Research Hub Amid Rising Threats
A new drone security research center has been established in Saxony-Anhalt to bolster Germany’s defenses against hybrid threats, including espionage and sabotage.
Germany has unveiled a state-of-the-art research center dedicated to drone security at the Magdeburg-Cochstedt Airport in Saxony-Anhalt. The facility aims to develop advanced counter-drone technologies to address the growing risks posed by unmanned aerial systems. Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt emphasized the importance of staying ahead in the technological race between drone defense systems and increasingly sophisticated drone threats.
The new center, named the Technology Center for Drone Security, will be operated by the German Aerospace Center (DLR), which has been managing the airport since 2019. It builds upon the National Test Center for Unmanned Aerial Systems established at the site in 2021. With an investment of up to ten million euros, the initiative is expected to create around 40 new jobs and expand its operations to the DLR facility in Braunschweig.
Dobrindt highlighted the urgency of the project, citing recent incidents such as a drone carrying explosives in Leipzig, which underscored the need for robust countermeasures. He described the situation as part of a ‘shadow war of the 21st century,’ where foreign entities target Germany through espionage, sabotage, and manipulation. The center is set to become a cornerstone of Germany’s security infrastructure against these evolving hybrid threats.
