Germany Anticipates Severe Thunderstorms Following Record Heatwave

A significant weather front is expected to bring violent thunderstorms to central Germany after a prolonged heatwave, according to the German Weather Service (DWD).

The DWD has reported that a weather front is separating hot air in southeastern Germany from cooler air in the north, creating conditions conducive to severe thunderstorms. Torrential rain, with forecasts of up to 20 liters per hour, is anticipated to begin in the northwest around midday, with the most intense storms expected in Saxony and Thuringia later in the afternoon. Isolated storms may produce over 30 liters of rain per square meter, accompanied by large hail and wind gusts reaching 120 kilometers per hour. Following record temperatures exceeding 40°C in several regions, including 40.5°C in Bernburg, the extreme weather is projected to subside by Friday night, although thunderstorms may persist in the southeast. Recent storms have already caused injuries and disruptions, highlighting the severe impact of the ongoing weather conditions.
