German Manufacturers Shift Operations to Hungary Amid Rising Costs

German industries are increasingly relocating production to Hungary, driven by high domestic costs and competitive pressures. The move highlights a broader trend of companies seeking cost-effective solutions in Eastern Europe.

Germany’s industrial sector is facing mounting challenges, including rising production costs, inflation, and declining demand. In response, many companies are shifting operations to Eastern Europe, with Hungary emerging as a key destination. Shorter supply chains and lower labor costs are making the region an attractive alternative for manufacturers aiming to maintain competitiveness.

One example is KACO, a mid-sized automotive supplier based in Baden-Württemberg, which has relocated several production lines to Hungary this year. The company cites increasing energy costs and shrinking profit margins as major factors behind the decision. CEO Gernot-Alois Feiel noted that producing in Germany has become unsustainable, especially after a major client reduced contract prices by 10%. As a result, raw materials like rubber are now being processed in Hungary instead of Germany.

This shift is part of a larger trend among German companies adopting a ‘local-for-local’ strategy, producing goods closer to their target markets to mitigate supply chain risks and potential tariffs. A recent survey of German executives revealed that nearly 60% anticipate job cuts in Germany by 2030, while Eastern Europe, India, China, and North America are expected to see workforce growth. Hungary, in particular, has attracted significant investment from major automakers like BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz, as well as Chinese firms like CATL and BYD, solidifying its role as a new hub for automotive production in Europe.
