German Foreign Minister Pledges Continued Support to Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul assured Ukraine of unwavering support during his visit to Kyiv ahead of the nation’s Independence Day, emphasizing his confidence in Ukraine’s eventual victory against Russian aggression.

Ahead of Ukraine’s 35th Independence Day, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul traveled to Kyiv to underline Germany’s steadfast support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. Speaking upon his arrival, Wadephul expressed his firm belief in Ukraine’s resilience and ultimate success. He highlighted the severe challenges Ukraine has endured, including intensified attacks during the summer and the destruction of critical infrastructure by Russian forces.

Wadephul condemned Russia for targeting Ukrainian civilians and energy facilities, accusing its leadership of trying to dismantle the country’s resolve. Mentioning the escalating violence in recent months, the German diplomat noted that July and August had become the deadliest months for Ukraine’s civilian population in over four years. He referred to the ongoing assault, including a recent Russian drone strike on a shopping center in Kryvyi Rih that claimed at least 16 lives and left many critically injured. The foreign minister reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to expanding its military, financial, and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, especially as the nation prepares for potential renewed attacks on its energy infrastructure during the winter months.

Wadephul also criticized the worsening conditions within Russia, calling out the regime’s ‘totalitarian repression’ and increasingly erratic propaganda. He emphasized that the prolonged conflict is not only inflicting devastation on Ukraine but is also pushing Russia deeper into economic decline. This marks Wadephul’s fourth visit to Ukraine since assuming office 16 months ago, a testament to Germany’s ongoing diplomatic engagement in seeking to bring an end to the war.
