German Exports to Middle East Plummet Amid Iran Conflict

Following the outbreak of the Iran conflict on February 28, 2023, German exports to the Middle East have significantly declined.

In March 2023, exports to Iran fell by 67% year-on-year, totaling approximately 25 million euros. Neighboring countries also experienced substantial decreases: exports to Qatar dropped nearly 60% to around 54 million euros, while those to Iraq and Kuwait decreased by 55% and 58%, respectively. Overall, exports to eight Middle Eastern nations amounted to nearly 1.5 billion euros, reflecting a decline of 757 million euros compared to the previous year. Experts attribute this downturn primarily to the ongoing conflict and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz imposed by Iran.
