Former U.S. Soldier Robert Gilman Released from Russian Detention
Robert Gilman, a former U.S. soldier, has been released from Russian custody after over four years, as confirmed by President Donald Trump. The release was reportedly granted on humanitarian grounds without any conditions from Russia.
President Donald Trump announced the release of Robert Gilman, who had been detained in Russia since 2022. Trump stated that his discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin led to this decision, emphasizing that there was no prisoner exchange involved and that Russia did not demand anything in return.
Gilman, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps, fell ill during a train journey in Russia and was subsequently arrested. Reports indicate that he was detained for alleged drunkenness and aggressive behavior at a train station in Voronezh, where he faced multiple charges. Initially sentenced to four and a half years, his term was later extended due to additional allegations of assaulting officials while incarcerated.
Following his release, Trump revealed that he spoke with Gilman, who expressed a desire for a good cheeseburger upon returning to the United States. Gilman is expected to land at Joint Base Andrews near Washington, D.C., later today, marking the end of a lengthy and challenging ordeal.
