Former Constitutional Court President Warns of Critical State Reform Needed

Andreas Voßkuhle, the former president of Germany’s Federal Constitutional Court, has issued a stark warning about the urgent need for comprehensive state reforms, citing a critical tipping point for the nation. He emphasizes the dangers of bureaucracy and a slow-moving system that hinders progress.

In a recent interview, Voßkuhle expressed deep concerns about the current state of governance, stating, ‘We have reached a tipping point. If we do not change, we will perish.’ He criticized the nation’s risk-averse and perfectionist mindset, which he believes is detrimental to timely decision-making and technological advancement.

Voßkuhle pointed out that the judiciary, particularly administrative courts, suffers from a ‘mindset problem,’ where judges often focus excessively on details and theoretical frameworks, losing sight of the practical implications of their decisions. He highlighted the negative impact this has on businesses facing existential threats due to prolonged legal processes.

Alongside fellow reform advocates, Voßkuhle has previously proposed extensive modernization measures for the state. While he acknowledged the government’s recent efforts to initiate reforms, he noted that many of these initiatives are overly technical and fail to engage the public. Julia Jäkel, a key collaborator, echoed his sentiments, stressing the necessity for collaborative efforts among federal and state leaders to address the urgent need for structural renewal.
