A fire broke out at St. Marien Hospital in Mülheim an der Ruhr on October 27, 2026, prompting a large-scale emergency response and affecting 32 individuals.
On Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at 12:56 PM, the Mülheim an der Ruhr Fire Department was alerted to a fire at St. Marien Hospital on Kaiserstraße following the activation of the automatic fire alarm system. Upon arrival, firefighters observed heavy smoke emanating from the building and immediately escalated the emergency response to a ‘hospital fire,’ calling in additional personnel. Rescue operations commenced swiftly, with one individual being evacuated via a turntable ladder and another through the stairwell. Hospital staff had already evacuated several individuals from the affected area prior to the arrival of emergency services.
As the situation unfolded, the emergency designation was upgraded to a ‘mass casualty incident’ due to the increasing number of affected individuals. Initially, 13 people were reported as impacted, but this number rose to 32 as additional individuals sought medical evaluation in the hospital’s emergency department. All affected persons underwent medical examinations and were treated at St. Marien Hospital. The fire was extinguished within approximately one hour, followed by extensive ventilation and safety checks conducted by the fire department.
A total of 50 emergency personnel were deployed, including two fire-fighting units, rescue services, and command staff. The Broich volunteer fire brigade ensured readiness for other emergencies in the city during the operation. The incident caused temporary traffic disruptions in the city center, including interruptions to tram services, which have since been resolved. After approximately four hours, the fire department concluded its operations and handed the site over to the police, who are now investigating the cause of the fire.
