Europol Set for Major Expansion with New Mandate
The European Commission has proposed a significant enhancement of Europol’s capabilities, aiming to improve real-time information sharing on cross-border crime among member states. This initiative includes a substantial budget increase and the establishment of support offices across Europe.
Under the new mandate, Europol will transition from a reactive to a proactive role in combating cross-border crime, enabling real-time data exchange with member states. This shift is expected to streamline operations and enhance the agency’s effectiveness in addressing criminal activities across Europe.
The proposed budget for Europol is set to rise by over one billion euros for the financial period from 2028 to 2034, allowing for the creation of approximately 900 new positions. This move aligns with the commitment made by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to double Europol’s personnel, following an earlier increase in staffing.
Additionally, the Commission aims to bolster the capabilities of Eurojust, the EU’s judicial agency, alongside enhancing the European Investigation Order to facilitate standardized procedures for cross-border evidence collection. These reforms are part of a broader strategy to establish uniform rules for surveillance measures, particularly in telecommunications, ensuring compliance with EU standards.
