Europeans See EU as Stability Anchor
Amid global uncertainty, Europeans increasingly view the EU as a beacon of stability and security, with record-high trust levels.
A new Eurobarometer survey reveals that 75% of Europeans perceive the European Union as a place of stability in a turbulent world, marking an 8-point increase since late 2025. This sentiment underscores growing trust in the EU as geopolitical challenges intensify. Additionally, 74% of respondents believe EU membership benefits their country, the highest level recorded since the question was first asked in 1983.
The survey highlights rising expectations for the EU to play a stronger role in global affairs. A significant 68% of Europeans want the EU to enhance its capacity to protect citizens from crises and security risks, while 73% advocate for the bloc to acquire more resources to tackle global challenges. Defence, security, and energy independence are seen as top priorities for strengthening the EU’s geopolitical position.
Economic concerns remain prevalent, with 58% of Europeans expressing pessimism about the future of the world—a 6-point increase since autumn 2025. Despite this, the EU’s peaceful and cooperative nature is widely valued, with 83% of respondents satisfied with their quality of life. However, satisfaction drops significantly among those facing financial difficulties, highlighting disparities in living standards.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola emphasized the importance of trust in the EU during uncertain times, stating, ‘In a troubled world, that trust is Europe’s greatest asset. It comes with a clear expectation that we act decisively to deliver security, prosperity, and opportunity for our citizens.’
The survey also reveals a strong desire for unity among member states, with 90% of respondents urging greater cohesion and adherence to international law. As alliances shift globally, Europeans increasingly view the EU as a stabilizing force, with 40% citing its role in protecting peace and security as the primary benefit of membership.
While optimism about the future fluctuates, the EU’s ability to foster cooperation and improve competitiveness remains a key focus. Citizens are calling for decisive action to address pressing issues, including energy independence and economic resilience. The survey results highlight the EU’s dual role as a protector and enabler of prosperity, even as fears of declining living standards persist.
