EU Commission’s Decision on Ukrainian Refugees Sparks Controversy

Anton Hofreiter, chair of the Bundestag’s European Affairs Committee, criticizes the EU Commission’s new policy requiring able-bodied Ukrainian men to apply for asylum instead of receiving automatic protection.

Hofreiter argues that the decision undermines the right to conscientious objection, stating, ‘No one should be forced to take up arms against their conscience.’ He emphasizes the need for support for Ukraine while respecting individual rights.

The EU Commission plans to extend temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees until March 4, 2028, but the new policy will apply to men aged 23 to 60 who cannot leave Ukraine due to military conscription.
