EU Commission Proposes Ban on Conversion Therapies Amid Public Support

The European Commission plans to propose a ban on conversion therapies aimed at altering individuals’ sexual orientation or gender identity, responding to a European Citizens’ Initiative with over 1.1 million supporters.

The initiative, led by EU Commissioner for Equality, Helena Dalli, addresses practices rooted in the erroneous belief that LGBTIQ+ individuals require ‘treatment.’ Such interventions can lead to severe long-term psychological and physical harm. While Germany has prohibited these practices for minors since 2020, they remain permissible for adults under certain conditions. The non-binding recommendation is expected to be finalized by the Commission in 2024.
