Debate Over Electoral Law: Is Gender Parity Necessary?

The ongoing debate highlights the tension between electoral fairness and gender representation.

Every member of parliament represents the entire German population, and this principle must remain intact. A return to a system based on social classes is not a viable option. Electoral law is crucial for democracy, determining who enters the parliament and its composition. The Union rightly insists that every directly elected representative from a constituency must also serve in the Bundestag. The current situation, where this is not the case, is difficult to justify.

The SPD has yet to abandon its aspirations for gender parity. While they may pursue this goal, quotas are incompatible with free elections. Each representative serves the whole German populace, meaning parliament does not necessarily reflect society. A law enforcing such representation would be unconstitutional. Historical evidence shows that gender or background does not dictate political stance, as seen during Angela Merkel’s tenure. Strengthening free and equal elections is essential, especially in today’s climate.
