Coalition Talks: Employment Protection Limit Proposed at $100,000 Annual Salary

Germany’s coalition leaders debate easing employment protection laws, sparking tensions between innovation advocates and worker rights defenders.

Germany’s coalition committee convened at the Chancellery to discuss critical reforms, including easing employment protection laws. The proposal, championed by Verena Pausder, chair of the German Start-up Association, suggests limiting employment protection to annual salaries below $100,000. Pausder argues that flexible labor markets drive innovation and growth, citing studies and international comparisons.

The debate has exposed divisions within the coalition. While the CDU supports measures to relieve businesses, the SPD’s left wing warns against undermining worker rights. Critics fear attacks on strike rights, sick leave policies, and employment protections. The Start-up Association proposes a ‘founder protection zone,’ exempting new businesses from employment protection for four years, alongside severance packages modeled on British ‘garden leave’ practices. The last major reform to Germany’s employment protection laws occurred in 2004.
