Cinemas Bounce Back: Ticket Sales Surge to Pre-Pandemic Levels

German cinemas are witnessing a remarkable recovery, with ticket sales in the first half of 2026 reaching their highest levels since before the pandemic, driven by two major Hollywood blockbusters.

The first half of 2026 has brought much-needed relief to the cinema industry in Germany, with ticket sales surging to approximately 47.5 million. This marks an impressive 16.9% increase compared to the same period last year, amounting to nearly seven million more tickets sold. Revenues have soared as well, climbing by around 24.5% to reach €502.2 million, the best performance since the pandemic-triggered lockdowns disrupted the entertainment sector.

While the industry has yet to fully match the numbers of 2019, when 119 million tickets were sold for the entire year, the renewed enthusiasm from moviegoers suggests a promising upward trend. At the forefront of this resurgence are two Hollywood mega-hits: ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and ‘The Odyssey.’ These two blockbusters have captivated audiences, prompting cinephiles to coin the term ‘Spodyssey’ to describe their combined box office allure.

Globally, the latest Spider-Man installment has already grossed over $2 billion within two weeks of its Los Angeles premiere, making it one of the fastest-grossing films in history, second only to ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Meanwhile, ‘The Odyssey’ has also hit the ground running, raking in around $264 million worldwide during its opening weekend. Thanks to these international successes, German cinemas are once again thriving, offering hope for further recovery in the months ahead.
