BSW Leader Rules Out Coalition with Far-Right Party Ahead of Saxony-Anhalt Election

Amira Mohamed Ali, leader of the Alliance for Justice and Welfare (BSW), has firmly rejected the possibility of forming a coalition with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the upcoming Saxony-Anhalt state election.

Amira Mohamed Ali, the leader of the Alliance for Justice and Welfare (BSW), has categorically ruled out any coalition with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party ahead of the state election in Saxony-Anhalt. In a recent interview, Mohamed Ali criticized the AfD for its support of military expansion and social welfare cuts, as well as for harboring individuals with extremist and fascist views. She stated that such ideological differences make collaboration with the AfD impossible.

Despite her rejection of a coalition, Mohamed Ali emphasized her party’s willingness to engage in discussions with all political groups, including the AfD, on specific policy issues. She criticized the strategy of completely isolating the AfD, arguing that it has failed to curb the party’s growing popularity. Mohamed Ali also dismissed the possibility of a coalition with the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), further narrowing her party’s potential alliances.

The BSW is vying for a spot in the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament, with recent polls suggesting it could narrowly surpass the 5% threshold required for representation. Mohamed Ali proposed the idea of a nonpartisan minister-president who could govern with shifting majorities, a concept previously floated by BSW founder Sahra Wagenknecht. She indicated that if this proposal is rejected, the BSW may abstain from voting in a potential third round of the minister-president election, a move that could inadvertently pave the way for the AfD’s candidate to assume the role.
