Berlin Left Party Faces Scrutiny Over Alleged Clan and Activist Connections

Reports indicate that members of Berlin’s Left Party are under scrutiny for alleged ties to individuals linked to radical pro-Palestinian activities and controversial clan members.

The Berlin Left Party is facing criticism following revelations about alleged connections between its members and individuals associated with radical pro-Palestinian activities and the Barbakh clan. According to a report by ‘Spiegel,’ newly elected parliamentarian Katharina Marg reportedly supported two men from the Barbakh clan, who are known to police. These men, aged 22 and 35, entered Germany via Greece in 2022 and 2023, had their asylum applications rejected, and were granted temporary toleration status. Both individuals have been linked to anti-Israel propaganda and incidents involving attacks on police officers.

Investigations into the two men have included allegations of property damage, assaults on police officers, severe breaches of public peace, dangerous bodily harm, incitement of hatred, and the use of symbols associated with unconstitutional and terrorist organizations. Despite these investigations, no formal charges have been filed. On October 29, the men were detained by Berlin police for deportation, sparking protests outside the police station. Katharina Marg reportedly participated in these protests, introducing herself as a ‘parliamentary supporter’ and requesting access to the police building. Marg later stated that she was present as an observer during the operation.

Separately, the Left Party in Berlin is also facing questions over its connections to Ibrahim Ibrahim, a known anti-Israel activist. Ahmed Abed, the party’s mayoral candidate for Neukölln, reportedly represented Ibrahim as a lawyer in two cases involving banned demonstrations. Ibrahim, who has been a controversial figure, was photographed with Vanessa Emde at the Left Party’s election celebration on September 20. Abed has denied any collaboration with Ibrahim, stating, ‘I do not work with him.’ The situation has raised concerns within the party, with Berlin’s top candidate Elif Eralp expressing fears for her family’s safety when addressing Ibrahim publicly.
