Berlin Gears Up for Parliamentary Elections: Digital Tool Helps Voters Decide
Ahead of Berlin’s parliamentary elections on September 20, 2026, a digital tool is assisting residents in aligning their views with the 17 parties vying for leadership of the capital’s governance for the next five years.
Berlin is set to hold parliamentary elections on September 20, 2026, with 2.5 million eligible voters expected to participate. These elections will determine the next government for the capital’s five-year legislative term. A total of 17 political parties are contending for voter support, offering diverse perspectives on key issues shaping Berlin’s future.
A specially developed online tool called the ‘Wahl-O-Mat’ is helping voters navigate their choices by comparing their positions on 38 critical topics to those of the participating parties. Designed by the Federal Center for Political Education, the tool includes input from young voters and first-time participants. By responding to statements with ‘agree,’ ‘disagree,’ or ‘neutral,’ voters can pinpoint the parties that best align with their priorities, while also reviewing each party’s detailed stance on these issues.
While the Wahl-O-Mat does not endorse specific parties, its results highlight potential matches based on shared viewpoints. Users can explore party positions further and gain a deeper understanding of election platforms. This resource is intended to empower Berliners in making informed decisions as they prepare to cast their votes and influence the city’s political direction. In the 2023 election, leading parties included CDU (28.2%), SPD and Greens (both at 18.4%), and others.
