Berlin Faces Traffic Disruptions Due to Security Conference on Tuesday

Extensive road, rail, and air restrictions are in place across Berlin as high-ranking officials gather for the Berlin Security Conference.

On Tuesday, Berlin will experience widespread traffic disruptions due to the Berlin Security Conference, which is set to host high-ranking representatives from European politics, military, and security agencies. The event will take place at a hotel in Lichtenberg near the S-Bahn station Landsberger Allee, with additional restrictions affecting City West and the government district. Police have announced closures impacting U-Bahn and S-Bahn services, including temporary suspension of stops at Bundestag station on the U5 line and limited operations on the Ringbahn.

The security measures extend beyond ground transportation, with waterway closures in the government district and restrictions in Berlin’s airspace. Approximately 3,400 police officers from various federal states are deployed to ensure safety during the conference. The event’s focus will be on the ongoing war in Ukraine and strategies to counter threats from Russia. Lithuania, this year’s partner country, will play a prominent role, with President Gitanas Nauseda opening the conference at 9:00 AM.

Following his opening remarks, President Nauseda is scheduled to meet German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at 10:20 AM to discuss security policy and Lithuania’s upcoming EU Council presidency, set to begin in January. Later, he will be welcomed by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Bellevue Palace at 12:00 PM. The Berlin Security Conference, established in 2001, operates as an independent forum for dialogue on pressing security issues. Police have advised residents and commuters to plan their routes accordingly to avoid affected areas.
