Angela Merkel’s Portrait Joins Chancellors’ Gallery

Angela Merkel’s official portrait has been unveiled, marking her place in Germany’s Chancellors’ Gallery.

Angela Merkel, Germany’s former Chancellor who served from 2005 to 2021, has officially joined the ranks of her predecessors in the Chancellors’ Gallery. Her portrait, painted by German-French artist Jérémy Queyras, was unveiled on Tuesday at Berlin’s Bode Museum in Merkel’s presence. The artwork, measuring 110 by 140 centimeters, depicts Merkel standing in her signature blue blazer. It will remain on display at the museum until October 4 before being moved to the Federal Chancellery, where it will be exhibited alongside portraits of other former Chancellors.

Merkel, now 71, expressed mixed emotions about the honor. In a recent interview with the weekly newspaper ‘Die Zeit,’ she remarked, ‘It’s strange to slowly become history,’ but added that she is approaching the recognition with composure, saying, ‘Well, there I’ll hang then.’ Notably, Merkel personally financed the portrait, ensuring it remains her property. Both the Bode Museum and the Chancellery will display the painting as a loan.

The artist, Jérémy Queyras, was selected by Merkel after an informal application process in 2022. Queyras, who grew up in Freiburg and studied art in London and Paris, relocated to Berlin for the project. Merkel reportedly chose him in June 2025 following their first meeting. The portrait reflects Queyras’ distinctive style and Merkel’s preference for a personal connection with the artist.

The tradition of the Chancellors’ Gallery dates back to former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, who initiated the idea of commemorating Germany’s leaders through portraits. Merkel’s inclusion in the gallery underscores her historic 16-year tenure as the country’s first female Chancellor. Meanwhile, a portrait of her successor, Olaf Scholz, has yet to be commissioned.

The unveiling of Merkel’s portrait has drawn public attention, not only for its artistic merit but also for its symbolic significance. As Germany reflects on Merkel’s legacy, the painting serves as a reminder of her pivotal role in shaping the nation’s modern history. Visitors to the Bode Museum have a limited opportunity to view the artwork before it takes its permanent place in the Chancellery.
