AfD Hits Record 40% in Thuringia Poll

A new poll shows the AfD surging to an unprecedented 40% in Thuringia, widening its lead over rival parties.

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has reached a historic high in Thuringia, securing 40% in a recent poll conducted by Insa for Funke Medien Thüringen. This marks a one-point increase since April and solidifies the party’s dominance in the region. The survey highlights the growing gap between the AfD and other political parties, with the ruling coalition of CDU, BSW, and SPD trailing at a combined 35%.

The poll, conducted among 1,000 Thuringian residents between June 23 and June 30, reveals significant shifts in voter sentiment. The CDU, led by Minister-President Mario Voigt, dropped two points to 22%, while the Left Party gained two points, reaching 16%. Smaller parties like the Greens and FDP remain below the 5% threshold, with the Greens inching up by one point to 4%. The SPD and BSW held steady at 6% and 7%, respectively.

Insa CEO Hermann Binkert emphasized that forming a majority coalition against the AfD would require an unprecedented four-party alliance. This underscores the challenges faced by traditional parties in countering the AfD’s growing influence. The AfD’s rise comes despite its classification as a ‘proven right-wing extremist’ organization by the Thuringian Office for the Protection of the Constitution.

The poll’s findings reflect a snapshot of public opinion rather than a forecast of election outcomes. With the next state election in Thuringia scheduled for 2029, political dynamics could shift significantly in the coming years. However, the results highlight the AfD’s increasing appeal among voters in the region, raising questions about the future of political alliances and governance.

The survey also notes a statistical margin of error of ±3.1 percentage points, which could slightly alter the reported figures. Nevertheless, the AfD’s 40% remains a record-breaking achievement for the party in Thuringia. As political analysts dissect the implications, the poll serves as a stark reminder of the shifting landscape in German politics.
