Pegah Edalatian Becomes First Secretary-General of Germany’s Green Party
Pegah Edalatian has made history as the first Secretary-General of Germany’s Green Party, following a pivotal internal vote.
Pegah Edalatian has been elected as the first Secretary-General of Germany’s Green Party after a successful internal vote on constitutional amendments. The changes, effective since Wednesday, automatically transitioned the role of Political Director to Secretary-General. Edalatian, born in Kassel in 1980 to an Iranian family, studied social sciences and international relations in Düsseldorf before working in development cooperation. She joined the Green Party at age 31 and quickly rose through the ranks, gaining recognition for her work in refugee policy and global development.
Identifying with the party’s left wing but rejecting dogmatism, Edalatian has been tasked with diversifying the Greens, including increasing representation of non-academics in leadership roles. Despite setbacks like election losses in 2024, she successfully re-entered the party’s leadership and ascended to Political Director. Her future plans remain uncertain, but her historic achievement as the first Secretary-General is undeniable.
