Coalition Unveils Reform Plans: A Unified Front Emerges

Germany’s coalition government announces a 34-point reform package aimed at economic recovery and social equity.

After months of internal debate, Germany’s coalition government has presented a comprehensive 34-point reform package designed to address economic challenges and promote social equity. In a symbolic move, the announcement was made in the garden of the Chancellery, with Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasizing the coalition’s commitment to unity and progress. ‘We want to get Germany back on track,’ Merz stated, highlighting measures to reduce bureaucracy, enhance business flexibility, and lower taxes.

Key reforms include tax relief for small and medium incomes starting in 2027, an increase in the basic and child tax allowances, higher child benefits, and the elimination of telephone-based sick leave. The reforms, amounting to €10 billion, are set to fully take effect by 2028. While the coalition leaders, including CSU’s Markus Söder and SPD’s Lars Klingbeil, stressed the importance of compromise, the Union successfully opposed raising the top tax rate for high earners. The package reflects a shared commitment to economic growth and social stability.
