Man Found with Knife and Hedgehog During Ticket Inspection at Hannover Central Station

Police at Hannover Central Station discovered a knife and a distressed hedgehog during a routine inspection of a man traveling without a valid ticket.

Federal police officers conducted a routine inspection of a 36-year-old man at Hannover Central Station after he was found traveling on an ICE train from Braunschweig to Hannover without a valid ticket. Upon searching the individual, officers discovered an 8.5-centimeter knife in his right trouser pocket, according to an official police statement.

Further inspection revealed a live hedgehog concealed in the front pocket of the man’s sweater. The animal appeared visibly distressed and attempted to escape the confined space. Following police instructions, the man placed the hedgehog on the ground, and officers took the animal into protective custody, placing it in a large box for safety. The hedgehog was later released into its natural habitat in a forested area of Eilenriede.

The man now faces multiple charges, including fare evasion, violation of the Weapons Act, and breach of the Animal Welfare Act. Additionally, he was issued a twelve-hour ban from Hannover Central Station. Police emphasized that hedgehogs are protected wild animals requiring appropriate care and habitat. They advised the public to avoid handling or transporting hedgehogs unnecessarily and to contact wildlife rescue organizations if an animal appears injured or in need of assistance.
