Union Gains in Polls While AfD Leads in Competence Question

A recent survey shows the Union slightly improving its position, while the AfD remains the strongest political force in Germany with 27% support.

The Union (CDU/CSU) has made slight gains in the latest ‘Trendbarometer’ survey conducted by Forsa for RTL and ntv, narrowing its gap with the Alternative for Germany (AfD). Published on Tuesday, the poll indicates that the Union now stands at 21% (+1), while the AfD remains unchanged at 27%, maintaining its position as the strongest political force in Germany. The survey also highlights that 57% of respondents do not believe any party is capable of solving the country’s problems.

Other parties showed mixed results in the poll. The Greens lost one percentage point, dropping to 16%, while the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Left Party remained steady at 13% and 11%, respectively. All other parties currently fall below the threshold required to enter the Bundestag. Additionally, 25% of respondents identified as undecided or non-voters, reflecting significant uncertainty among the electorate.

When asked which party is most capable of addressing Germany’s challenges, 14% of respondents named the AfD, followed by the Union at 10%. The Greens were chosen by 6%, while the SPD and the Left Party each received 5%. Dissatisfaction with Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s (CDU) performance was also evident, with 86% of respondents expressing discontent and only 12% expressing approval. The survey was conducted between October 20 and October 26, involving 2,501 participants, with a margin of error of up to 2.5 percentage points.
