Google’s Market Power: Is Life Without Google Possible?
A German documentary explores the dominance of Google and its impact on businesses and users, highlighting concerns over its growing market power.
A recent documentary aired by ARD titled ‘The Truth About Google’ investigates the pervasive influence of Google in everyday life and its implications for businesses and consumers. Heike Kuhk-Hanisch, a primary school teacher from Esslingen, participated in the documentary by abstaining from Google services for two weeks, testing alternative platforms for internet searches, navigation, and cloud storage. Her experience underscores the difficulty of avoiding Google, which has become deeply integrated into daily routines.
August Ullrich, a distillery owner in Berlin, shared his perspective on Google’s dominance in the online marketplace. Since founding his business in 2014, Ullrich has relied heavily on Google to drive traffic to his web shop, which accounts for a third of his revenue. Initially, Google provided free visibility, but over time, the company began charging for advertising placements. Ullrich expressed concerns about the rising costs and lack of alternatives, stating, ‘We are at the mercy of Google. If we stop paying, our brand disappears online.’ This dependency highlights the challenges faced by small businesses in maintaining online visibility.
Google’s advertising model, which auctions prime ad placements to the highest bidder, has drawn scrutiny from regulators worldwide. In the United States, courts ruled in 2024 and 2025 that Google abused its monopoly in search engines and digital advertising technology. Similarly, the European Commission imposed a €3 billion fine in September 2025 for ‘abusive practices in online advertising technology.’ Critics argue that Google’s monopolistic practices lead to higher costs for businesses and consumers. Jonathan Kanter, Deputy Attorney General for the U.S. Department of Justice, emphasized the broader economic impact of such market dominance, stating that it results in increased prices across industries. Despite these legal challenges, Google’s annual reports continue to highlight its commitment to providing users with relevant links, though its reliance on advertising remains a central revenue source.
