Explosions in Thessaloniki Target Conservative Politicians, Injuring Five
Three explosions in Thessaloniki, Greece, targeted residences of conservative politicians, leaving five injured, including one in critical condition.
In Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, three explosions occurred on properties linked to members of the conservative ruling party, Nea Dimokratia. The incidents resulted in five injuries, one of them severe. According to police reports, the attacks appeared to target residences of party members, with one of the affected vehicles belonging to a parliamentary candidate.
The explosive devices were reportedly constructed using camping gas canisters, which caused fires that engulfed cars and motorcycles. Among the injured were the parliamentary candidate and her mother, who suffered burns. The mother is currently in intensive care. Three other residents were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation.
Nea Dimokratia has labeled the incidents as acts of terrorism, with party official Konstantinos Kyranakis stating, ‘The perpetrators intended to kill.’ He also criticized what he described as a culture of tolerance toward political violence. The Minister for Population Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, condemned the attackers as ‘foolish and unrepentant individuals’ deserving severe punishment. The anti-terrorism unit in Thessaloniki has taken over the investigation. Attacks on symbols of authority, including politicians and law enforcement, are relatively common in Greece.
