State Security Investigates Suspected Arson Attack on Alternative Housing Project in Cottbus
Police are investigating a suspected arson attack on an alternative housing project in Cottbus, believed to have a far-right extremist motive.
Police in Cottbus have launched an investigation into a suspected arson attack on the alternative housing project known as ‘Zelle 79.’ The incident occurred during the night leading into Thursday when unknown individuals threw bottles filled with flammable liquids at the building’s facade. A small fire broke out near the property but was quickly extinguished by responding officers. No injuries were reported, although residents were inside the building at the time of the attack. Authorities are treating the case as attempted murder, pending further evaluation by the public prosecutor’s office.
According to police statements, the attack is suspected to have a far-right extremist background. Witnesses reported seeing two male individuals, aged approximately 15 to 20 years old and dressed in black, near the scene of the crime. The housing project had displayed a Christopher Street Day (CSD) poster and a rainbow flag as part of the ongoing CSD action weeks in Cottbus, which celebrate LGBTQ+ rights. Lukas Pellio, spokesperson for the initiative ‘Safe Spaces,’ described the attack as a direct assault on queer life in the city. The State Security division has established a special investigative group in collaboration with the homicide commission, and security measures around the housing project have been increased.
Cottbus has been identified as a hotspot for far-right extremism in Brandenburg. The city has witnessed several incidents of hate crimes in recent years, including antisemitic graffiti on a synagogue and attacks on other alternative housing projects. ‘Zelle 79’ itself has been targeted multiple times, with previous incidents involving pyrotechnics and attempts to damage the building’s entrance. In April, hundreds of residents demonstrated against right-wing violence in the city. Police continue to investigate the latest attack and are urging witnesses to come forward with any information.
